about the role:
The Vice President of Development is a senior leadership position responsible for designing, implementing, and leading BGCO’s comprehensive fundraising, donor engagement, and communications strategy. The VP will ensure that the organization meets, if not exceeds, its annual and long-term revenue goals while raising visibility and deepening community and donor relationships.
Reporting directly to the CEO and serving as a key member of the senior leadership team, the VP of Development will lead a small, high-impact, hands on team across individual giving, institutional fundraising, marketing, events, and communications. This role will be instrumental in building a culture of philanthropy across the organization and shaping BGCO’s financial sustainability and public image.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Fund Development & Planning
Develop and execute an annual fundraising strategy in alignment with BGCO’s mission and strategic plan, incorporating revenue from individuals, foundations, corporations, special events, and planned giving.
Oversee the implementation of multi-year campaigns to support growth and capital needs.
Collaborate with the CEO and Board to set fundraising goals and track progress.
Monitor and manage department budgets and ensure alignment with overall organizational financial goals.
Provide timely, accurate reporting on fundraising metrics to the CEO and Board of Directors.
Leadership & Team Management
Lead and mentor a growing development and communications team, providing clear direction, performance goals, and professional development opportunities.
Foster collaboration across departments to ensure fundraising and program alignment.
Promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization, empowering staff and board to serve as ambassadors.
Individual Giving & Major Gifts
Personally manage a portfolio of high-capacity donors and prospects.
Work with the CEO, Board, and staff to cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts.
Oversee all donor engagement strategies including annual campaigns, direct mail, online giving, and planned giving.
Ensure the donor database (CRM) is used effectively and accurately.
Institutional Giving & Grants
Personally lead through example staff responsible for foundation, government, and corporate grants, ensuring strong prospecting, proposal development, grant compliance, and timely reporting.
Maintain and grow relationships with institutional funders through consistent communication and stewardship.
Marketing, Communications & Events
Create and personally implement the development of a comprehensive marketing and communications plan to enhance BGCO’s visibility and impact.
Oversee and be the major stakeholder for the production of print and digital communications including newsletters, annual reports, social media, press releases, and fundraising collateral.
Lead the planning and execution of fundraising and cultivation events, ensuring alignment with brand and development goals.
Serve as a spokesperson at community events, panels, and public engagements.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or CFRE certification a plus.
7–10 years of progressive leadership experience in fundraising, with demonstrated success in major gifts, institutional giving, and strategic planning.
Existing relationships and experience in Northern California a plus, Oakland a game changer.
Personally responsible for securing multiple grants and donations between $250,000 and $1,000,000 annually.
Experience in a nonprofit environment, preferably serving youth or education-related causes.
Proven ability to manage and inspire a team, while also being a hands-on contributor.
Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with senior leadership, board members, and community partners.
Proficiency with donor management systems (e.g., Salesforce, MyClubHub, OneCause, Blackbaud, etc.) and Microsoft Office Suite.
Employment Status: Full-Time, Exempt, On-Site
Salary Range: $110,000 - $140,000 Annually BOE & Qualifications
